Avoid The Potholes

We all know that winter driving can be tricky, but spring driving involves many unique hazards. Whether you drive long or short distances or only short distances, pay attention to potholes.

Our roads gradually deteriorate because of snow ploughs, salt and sand, so look out for potholes in areas where snow is thawing — especially as the weather begins to warm up. Slow down before you hit them, because it may cause your windshield to break its seal and your wheel alignment may be thrown out. The best strategy is to try to look out for, and avoid potholes altogether.

Light snow may still be falling in some areas, or snow on the ground is melting. This can cause slushy driving conditions that can be almost as slippery as snow itself. Remove your snow tires only once your area is mostly free of snow.

Basic Windshield Care

The smallest air pocket or crack can expand when the season changes, due to extreme temperature fluctuations. Slamming the doors on your vehicle creates vibrations that impact your entire vehicle, and, in time, can lead to windshield damage.
Your windshield needs professional, regular cleaning

Traditionally, people prefer cleaning their cars and windshields at home, with a good-old soapy mixture and a sponge. However, experts claim that this action, repeated, may damage the protective layer the manufacturer is usually applying on all windshields. A better alternative is visiting a car wash, where the cleaning process is done by using high-pressure foam pumps and high-pressure water pumps. This will maintain your windshield squeaky clean for longer.
Small cracks and chips can ruin your windshield

Leading experts in the auto glass industry claim that cracks and chips must be managed and fixed within 30 minutes of their occurrence, in order to prevent further damage. Due to vibrations created when driving, even the smallest dents and cracks can expand to dangerous dimensions.
TIP: If you can’t reach an auto glass repair shop immediately after a crack emerges, apply a piece of transparent tape over it–only as a temorary fix.

Maintaining Auto Glass in Winter

Auto glass in winter
Cold weather creates a new set of challenges for auto glass. The temperature gap between a car’s heated interior and the much colder outside temperature can put stress on glass.
Here are a few tips on keeping your auto glass in top condition.

Take care of small chips before temperatures plunge

A tiny rock chip that didn’t cause problems all year can turn into a huge spidery crack when the windshield freezes in winter. Contact an auto glass maintenance and repair specialist to repair small chips. Often they can come to your location to make the repairs easily and inexpensively before they turn into big problems.

Defrost your windshield slowly

Allow time for the car to heat up and the windshield defroster to get warm and melt ice and snow. If you have to, use a de-icer that is approved for glass to melt ice. Don’t pour hot water on the windshield – the sudden change of temperature can cause cracking.

Use a plastic ice scraper to remove stubborn ice

Metal spatulas, knives or tools can scratch the windshield.

Use a winter washer fluid

Check the reservoir often to make sure it is full. Have the reservoir repaired or replaced if it is leaking. Remember to take the time to prepare your car and your windshield for winter. Have a checklist ready and make sure you have winter washer fluid, the proper de-icer products and several ice scrapers on hand.

Remembering The Fallen

– by Lt Colonel John McCrae
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Poem written during World War 1 by Canadian physician and Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae on May 3, 1915, after presiding over the funeral of a friend and fellow soldier.

5 ways to protect kids on Halloween

Help protect trick-or-treaters by following these driving safety tips on Halloween. Be especially careful between 4 and 8 p.m., when most severe vehicle/young pedestrian accidents happen.

  1. Have a clear view. Make sure your windshield is wiped clean, both inside and out.
  2. Drive slowly, and don’t pass stopped vehicles. The driver might be dropping off children.
  3. Park your mobile phone. Avoid distractions by waiting until you’ve stopped to call, text, or surf.
  4. Watch for children darting into the street. Kids can cross the street anywhere, especially around Halloween.
  5. Communicate with other drivers. Always use your turn signals and your hazard lights when dropping off or picking up kids.

Fall and winter weather is right around the corner. Here are four ways you can protect your auto glass. Each of the tips below can go a long way in preventing damage to your windshield during extreme weather conditions.

  1. Inspect your windshield for chips or cracks
Chips and cracks should be professionally repaired immediately.
  2. Have your windshield professionally treated with a rain repellent
This will help your visibility stay high, no matter how heavy the rain or snow might get.
  3. Install newer, stronger wiper blades
This simple step may go a long way in helping you avoid low visibility during downpours.
  4. Use an antifrost or defogging product
If you are not familiar with how to apply these products, just ask our auto glass professionals.

How Long Can You Drive On A Broken Windshield?

Halco Glass Repair

Driving With A Cracked Windshield

The best choice is to fix it right away. Even a small rock chip in your auto glass can start to grow as you keep on driving. Worse, if debris, heavy rain or anything else hits a crack in your windshield, it could break wide open.

How severe is the crack in your windshield?

A minor chip is not a major risk. You could probably drive for hundreds of miles without a problem. However, a large crack like a spider web must be fixed right away.

Where is the crack in your windshield?

Cracks and chips on the driver’s side should be fixed right away. A hard bump, or other factors can make a small crack much worse very quickly – and could potentially obscure a driver’s view.

Repairing a cracked windshield: Sooner is better.

The longer you put it off, the more it will cost you in the long run. Getting a small crack fixed will cost far less than a full windshield replacement down the road.

Common DIY Window Repair Mistakes

DIY at-home kits

Some drivers try to use at-home kits to fix a rock chip. If you are not familiar with the materials and the process, you can actually cause more damage, instead of fixing the original chip.

Web video guides

Web video guides make windshield repair seem simple enough. Just like any online video or tutorial, you have to consider the source. A professional who is trained to do repairs makes it look easy on camera, because they have a steady hand and have done hundreds of repairs.

Ignoring the problem

Some drivers choose to just keep driving, waiting until it is so bad that it must be replaced. This is not only a more expensive decision, but an unsafe one. Drivers and passengers could be cut by broken glass if your windshield finally caves in after several months of driving.

Best choice

The best choice is to visit a professional auto glass service right away. Once you see a windshield crack, a chipped window or other auto glass damage, let the pros get to work.

Proper Glass Repair Is Critical

Be Careful When Considering Price

When faced with replacing a windshield, many car owners default to the lowest-price option. But if you take this route and are in a serious accident, your decision could cost you your life.

An incorrectly installed windshield could pop out in an accident, allowing the roof to cave in and crush the car’s occupants. Furthermore, when the front airbags deploy, they exert a tremendous force and could blow out an improperly installed windshield.

The windshield is the No. 1 safety restraint in your vehicle, so be sure to choose the right installer.

And if you can’t make it down to our place, we’ll make it down to yours.
